Who Knew the Grocery Store Was So Much Fun
Crissy Gipson

I took my three and a half year old nephew to the grocery store last week. Yes, that's right, my nephew. I am not a mother yet. I am sure you are all laughing and smiling and thinking "rookie".

The grocery stores in my area have carts that are shaped like big cars and the children can sit in them. Upon seeing them, my nephew had to ride in one. We get down the produce aisle and are nearing the seafood area. Caden yelled up to me "Crissy - wheel me over there". I had no idea what he was talking about. He quickly pointed to a glass cage of lobsters near the floor. Funny, I had never noticed them before, I thought to myself. So, I took him over there and we watched them for a little bit. So, I started wheeling him around again and he says "Man, this is fun".

Fun?? The grocery store?? Who knew it was fun? I always thought it was a chore. When I go to the grocery store I spend my time sorting through coupons, veering around stationary shoppers, looking for the sale items, and trying to get out of the store without spending a hundred dollars…… Sounds like an Olympic sport.

Then, my nephew tells me he doesn't want to sit in the car. He wants to sit up in the cart like a big boy. Great, I think to myself. I'll just go around pushing this thing. And, of course, he spots a display of beef jerky. And he has to have one. Right Now. I talk him into saving it until we are in the car. To distract him further I give the cart a little push and let go. First, shock comes across his face as he realizes that he is moving and I am not. Then a smile sweeps over him and he says "Do it again, do it again" over and over, I do it again.

After wheeling around a few more aisles, I realized that I forgot something. We were heading back near the lobsters when I heard Caden yell "Fight, Fight!! Crissy, they're fighting!!" Oh my gosh, I am thinking, two shoppers are fighting? I look around and can't see any bloodshed. "Who is fighting?" I ask my nephew. "Them, them" he points to the lobsters. Oh, back to those lobsters. Well, when you think about, from his eyes, grocery shopping really must be like a day at the zoo!
